Frequently Asked Questions About CAP's Volunteer Training Program

What is the CAP Volunteer Training Program?
The CAP Volunteer Training Program teaches adult volunteers to present a yearlong Drug and Alcohol Prevention/Education Program to all fifth and sixth grade students in Pulaski Street School. Since 1982, CAP has trained 25-30 volunteers each year to teach the program with the assistance of Peer Leaders from the High School and Middle School.

How does the program work?
CAP offers monthly training sessions on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings. Volunteers only need to attend the one session that is convenient. After training, volunteers and peer leaders teach that month’s lesson to a class of fifth or sixth grade students. Currently, sixth grade lessons take place on Thursdays at 9:00 am or 10:35 am. Fifth grade lessons take place on Fridays at 9:50 am and 12:55 pm. Each one of our lessons is taught by the same Volunteer and Peer Leaders each month.

Who can become a volunteer?
Anyone can volunteer, there is no experience required. CAP provides a two hour training session each month, so the total commitment is only about three hours each month.

How will I know if I am teaching the lesson correctly?
CAP will share feedback with you that we receive from classroom teachers and professional staff who may observe you from time to time. Any volunteer who requests additional training or assistance will receive it.

How do I sign up or find out more?
Call or email CAP at 727-3722 or Volunteer@RiverheadCAP.org

Frequently Asked Questions About CAP's Peer Leadership Program

What is the CAP Peer Leadership Program?
CAP Peer Leadership is a program started by Riverhead CAP in the Riverhead Middle School and High School.  Peer Leaders are trained by professional Social Workers to help teach CAP’s year-long drug and alcohol prevention program to all fifth and sixth grade students in Pulaski Street school.  CAP has been conducting this prevention program since 1983.

What do Peer Leaders do?
CAP Peer Leaders receive weekly training in drug and alcohol prevention. The training typically takes place during school hours, but after-school training is available to those who request it. The training prepares Peer Leaders to assist volunteer presenters from the community to teach the drug and alcohol prevention program. Peer leaders are role models for the fifth and sixth grade students they teach. They also participate in the annual Say NO To Drugs March. In addition to weekly training, Peer Leaders also attend an annual Alcohol Workshop in the spring and a two day Summer Workshop. Many experienced Peer Leaders become presenters themselves and assist with workshops. CAP Peer Leaders are eligible to receive Community Service Hours for their participation.

Who can become a Peer Leader?
You can!  Peer Leadership is open to eighth grade and high school students. Peer Leaders are asked to:
          • attend weekly trainings and all workshops
          • refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs
          • make up any classwork that is missed due to Peer Leadership
          • maintain satisfactory academic standing and attendance
          • be a positive role model

How can I become a Peer Leader?
Just sign up with the CAP Social Worker in your school:
